The Ford Motor Company gave the Continental a full redesign in 1961, with a more compact and clean-sided design, rear-hinged suicide' rear doors, and pillarless hardtop or power soft top convertible (the latter priced $646 higher than the hardtop), that earned a Bronze Medal from the Industrial Design Institute (IDI) of New York. Underneath the hood was a 430 cubic-inch 'MEL' V8 engine carried over from the previous generation, delivering 300 horsepower through a 3-speed automatic transmission. A total of 3,138 Lincoln Continental Convertibles were produced in 1963.
