During Monterey Car Week, we had the pleasure of spending a few hours with the new Lotus Emira 420 Sport
As enthusiasts, we find ourselves in an interesting time where most OEMs are straying further and further away from true driver connection. The Emira in general, and now the new 420 Sport, is unequivocally taking the opposite approach.
The experience behind the wheel falls nothing short of enthralling. Hydraulic steering, a true lightweight chassis, and 416hp from a turbocharged inline-four at only 3,100 Lbs.
The induction noise is intoxicating. Every release of the throttle is met with a symphony of turbo flutter pouring through the side ducts, while its lightning-fast 8-speed DCT keeps you reaching for the next gear and wanting another pull.
And now, with the removable roof, that experience is taken to an entirely different level.
With nothing separating you from the surroundings, the induction noise and exhaust become completely unfiltered. You hear the car breathing directly behind you, the exhaust bouncing off the surrounding landscape, and the turbo releasing inches from your ears. It creates a visceral, almost sensory overload that no Emira before it has been able to deliver.
We've had the privilege of driving nearly every category of performance car imaginable, and without a shadow of a doubt, the 420 Sport's handling and road feel are comparable to-and in many cases far superior to vehicles costing hundreds of thousands more.
The 420 feels locked onto rails. Body roll is non-existent and every minimal input through the steering wheel translates directly into what the car does beneath you. The harder you push it, the more confidence it gives back. It feels scarily composed.
At a time when performance cars continue to become heavier, quieter and more assisted, Lotus has doubled down on what us enthusiasts fell in love with in the first place: lightness, feedback, sound and TRUE driver involvement.
There are very, VERY few new cars that make you feel this connected to the road.
